Corryvreckan, the “cauldron of the speckled seas”, is the third largest whirlpool in the world, located in the gulf of water between Islay and Jura. The roar of the maelstrom can be heard as much as ten miles away, and certain stretches of water around it have been officially classified as unnavigable by the Royal Navy. In Celtic mythology, the goddess of winter is said to wash her laundry in the whirlpool: the resulting white sheets are spread out across the land, becoming the blanket of snow that coats the country. And in 1947, while he lived on Jura, George Orwell nearly drowned in the whirlpool. His boat capsized and stranded him and his family - including his three-year-old son - on a tiny rocky outcrop, from which they were eventually rescued by fishermen.
What better local feature after which to name a whisky, especially one from a legendary distillery particularly famed for its intense, uncompromising style?
Ardbeg Corryvreckan replaced the Airigh nam Beist in 2009, and started picking up awards the same year. At cask strength (57.1%), it is certainly bold; but despite its naming, this is one of the lighter and gentler Ardbegs out there. But that’s not saying much: the peat dominates, as ever. A proportion of the spirit has been matured in ex-Burgundy wine casks, lending it a little extra fruit and tannins. It has a relatively light mouthfeel, with herbal, piney notes, plenty citrus (orange peel, lemon sherbet, grapefruit) and tingling spices, and an unmistakably coastal burst of salt in the finish. A swirling maelstrom of flavours, if that’s not too much of an obvious cliche.
