PDR Cigars paired with Ron Larimar Rum

PDR Cigars paired with Ron Larimar Rum

24.10.2021

Hello this all you ladies and gentleman, cigar and spirit lovers on another Sunday to bring you some fantastic and we hope enlightening reviews and thoughts on everything we all love.

Today I talk about the highlights of our last virtual event, where our hosts Steve Johnstone – owner and Managing Director of Robert Graham 1874 and Scott Vines – Managing Director or Tor Imports Limited were joined by two very special guests Abe Flores – Owner of PDR Cigars and Iain Forteath the Angus Dundee Master Blender & Global Brand Ambassador.

For all involved, we had the pleasure of sampling two of Abe’s cigars. The first being A. Flores El Criollito Robusto which showcases a finely-aged Nicaraguan Criollo and Dominican blend with a hearty San Andres Mexican binder and Ecuadorian Criollo Rosado wrapper! Which paired perfectly with of Rum we had selected to go with it and I will come back to this a little later.

The second cigar of the evening A. Flores 1975 Gran Reserva Corojo Purito First released in 2013, meticulously crafted in honour of Abe, one of the best blenders in the business. Using a Dominican binder, a bevy of Nicaraguan Habano filler leaves, and topped in an extensively aged 2006 Dominican Corojo wrapper.

Now when I say Abe is one of the best, I could talk about not only his passion for cigars or his music career and getting to be in the cover band that performed before ‘Prince’ went on stage. I am saying Abe really knows his stuff being the last member to join Procigar which in 1992, the most traditional and experienced Cigar Manufacturers in the Dominican Republic established Procigar, an association whose objectives then and now, are to defend, protect and divulge the good name of the land of Cigar Country, exporter of the best Premium cigars in the world.

Let me now take you onto the spirits we paired with the cigars. Our guests got to sample four different kinds of Rum of the Ron Larimar, a creation of Angus Dundee distillers. The name ‘Larimar’ is after the rare precious gem stone referred to as the ‘the Jewel of the Caribbean’ which has a light blue to dark blue silky luster and to look at the polished crystal in jewellery would remind you of the Caribbean Sea and can only be found in the Dominican Republic. So, a great evening of celebrating the fine products of this country.

Iain walked us through all four of these truly outstanding Rums finished off in different ways to really pick up some delectable flavours. Each of which have been aged for Five years.

Ron Larimar Rum - Bourbon Cask Finish, with a milk chocolate, cooked pineapple and vanilla pod mixed with sweet golden raisins and nutmeg spices.

Ron Larimar Rum - Peated Single Malt Cask Finish, Creamy oak and fresh pear notes encompassed by cooked agave, integrated peat smokiness and lime zest highlights.

Ron Larimar Rum - Pedro Ximenez Cask Finish, Sweet and indulgent with layers of date, fig and prune mingled with salted caramel, chocolate raisins and cigar box spices.

Ron Larimar Rum - Oloroso Cask Finish, Layers of chocolate, butterscotch and fruit cake bound with espresso coffee and cinnamon spices.

A delightful evening all around and if you have not had a chance to join us for a virtual tasting, they are a great to try new and exciting things from the comfort of your own house.

Until next time folks ‘Happy drinking and smoking’

Iain – Cambridge Manager
